Disabling comments shuns your visitors

Are you looking for an easy way to shun the visitors to your business blog?  Do you want to tell them that what they think really doesn’t matter?  Well, one way to do that is to not allow commenting on your blog posts.

One of the many reasons blogging is so popular is because of the interaction it creates between you, the author, and the people who visit your blog.  Blogging software platforms have simplified this process to where interacting with your readers is almost an automated process.

Knowing this, I am still surprised at how many business blogs I come across that do not allow someone to offer their feedback.  Generally I find this kind of setup on blogs that offer little information or anything of value; these blogs are basically just sites that have been setup to create links and post “ads” about their products.  But occasionally I stumble upon a nice business blog that is full of great information, but every post carries the dreaded “commenting disabled” tag.

I can understand why “spam” blogs disable comments, but the good business blogs that do this make me wonder.  Why go through the effort of providing additional information to your potential customers in a blog format and cut off the flow of information coming back?

Are they getting too many spam comments?  There are several types of filter plugins available that will reduce this or even completely remove them.  As long as there are blogs there will always be spam comments but plugins like Akismet are great for combating this.

Or I wonder if they haven’t budgeted out enough time to keep up with the comments that may be flowing in.  If that is the case then this may be faulty planning on the author’s part.  Blogs and commenting go hand in hand and should be thought of as a package deal if you want to extract the most value from your blog.

All comments, good or bad, have value

If you are going to go through the effort to connect with your customer base in a more personal way through blogging, you need to go all the way and utilize the comments on your blog.  Let your visitors speak their mind on what you have to say.  Respond back to what they say.  Regardless if a reader’s comment is positive or negative, there is value in every comment you receive on your blog.

Positive comments are what you want, but don’t make the mistake of dismissing negative or critical ones.  Try to take what that reader is saying and see if there is any validity in it.  Can you learn from what they said and improve upon your business?  You see your business one way, but the comments you receive reflect how your customers see your business so it is very important to read and understand their viewpoints as well.

Comments on your business blog are an excellent way to receive feedback on how well your business is satisfying your customer base.  Disabling comments not only shuns your visitors, but it also cuts off the flow of this valuable information.
