If you aren’t familiar with meta tags, they are little snippets of code in the “head” section of web pages. Their job is to provide information about the web page they reside on. Information like a description and keywords that are associated with the content of the page. If you are looking to maximize the SEO benefits from business blogging then you have to pay attention to the meta tags.

I can hear some of you saying, “This isn’t 1995! Meta tags aren’t that important anymore!” Yes, I agree with you to a point. Meta tags do not carry a lot of weight like they used to, but there is still some benefit from optimizing your meta tags. And if you want an edge in your business niche, you will have to take advantage of every little asset you come across.

I am still amazed at the amount of blogs I come across that do not have the proper meta tags in place. I find so many that are either incomplete, or simply nonexistent. These blogs will have a “title” tag for their posts and nothing else. No description and no keywords. In the realm of business blogging this just won’t do.

Using Wordpress as a base, it is very easy to ensure you have the proper meta tags in place. There are several SEO plugins available for the Wordpress blogging software that will enable you to create and edit the meta tags for your blog. One of the most popular is the All in One SEO Pack. This plugin generates meta tags for your blog and for individual posts as well. You also will have the ability to manually enter any meta information you desire.

I have noticed that with some SEO plugins the meta data is not always automatically created. That is why I always recommend blog authors to enter their own meta information for each article they publish on their business blogs. This is really a simple task. Normally, the SEO plugins will have an area below the text box in your posting area where you can enter in the meta information.

For the meta “description” I recommend using the first few sentences of your article that is about to be published. Generally you should be providing a preview of your whole article in the first few sentences of your post, so this snippet of your article will make great content for your meta description tags.

Wordpress almost always uses the “tags” on your article for the meta “keywords”. If you use several keyword specific tags on your posts then this should be sufficient. If not, enter your desired keywords in the appropriate section in the same place where you provided a meta description.

I have never found a valid reason for overriding the title tag that is created. The title tag for individual posts is the actual title of your article and that is what it should be regardless. You can leave that area alone.

By taking a little extra time formatting your business blog posts for meta tag purposes you can gain a little more juice to your posts. With the markets as competitive as they are we need to do all we can to help our marketing stand out as much as possible.
